Why do taxis use crown victoria?

They use gas like a monster, but why are they used on taxi? I figure they'll lose a lot of money by using them, better go with more fuel sufficient cars like honda civic/toyota prius right? Why do taxis use crown victoria?
wont be long/the taxi commission has mandated new cars to be nissan 4 cylinders and the wagon style/as taxis wear out they have to be replaced by these hybrid types
been using crown Vic's as taxis long before gas got up to $4 @ gallon.

they are favored because they are relatively cheap cars to put 150k+ miles on. They are large so safety isn't an issue, the parts are cheap because it's american an they're a very comfortable ride (wouldn't you rather ride in the back seat of a Vic rather than a civic?)Why do taxis use crown victoria?
It's the only big CAR left. Huge trunk. Lots of space in the front and back seats. I love my dads because it's a retired cop car with most of the equipment left in and on it.
Several places already use the Prius and have for years.

They get them cheap from the police department.

They car is big to fit passenger and their luggage.

I have seen more and more Prius as taxis.
